Leukaemia victim Jasmina Anema laid to rest
The cancer-stricken girl who inspired Rihanna and Kelly Rowland to issue emotional appeals for bone marrow donors has been laid to rest in New York.
Six-year-old Jasmina Anema lost her battle with leukaemia last week (27Jan10) after being admitted to New York University's Langone Medical Center, suffering from fevers and shortness of breath.
The little girl captured the hearts of the public as she bravely fought a rare and deadly form of the disease.
Anema was diagnosed with the illness in January, 2009 and befriended the singers as they called on fans to register as bone marrow donors to help find a potential match.
A suitable donor was found and the youngster received a bone marrow transplant last year (09) - but tragedy struck last Wednesday when she was diagnosed with pneumonia in both lungs and passed away.
Anema's friends and relatives joined her grieving mother Thea Anema at Manhattan's Industria Studios on Sunday (31Jan10) to pay their last respects to the youngster as she was laid to rest in a tiny white coffin.
Paying her respects to the little girl last week, Rihanna said, "I am incredibly heartbroken that Jasmina has passed away. She was such a brave and special child. She showed me more strength and spirit than many adults I have met. I feel blessed that I was able to have her in my life, and know that through her example she has saved many lives. She was truly an angel on earth." (MT/WNWCPL)
